Sampling for the Petrochem Industry

Petrochemical Process Samples

Sampling is the act of capturing product from the process stream for the purpose of analysis.  It is essential that during sampling the products are not contaminated by handling and are a current representation of the stream from which they are captured.

Samples are generally taken for the following reasons:

  • To validate hydrocarbon constituents or quality
  • To determine process plant efficiency
  • To ensure that products are being made according to specifications
  • As part of troubleshooting in determining the source of product contamination

Products are routed to storage tanks from process plants preferably below 200 degrees Fahrenheit. This is to avoid the flashing of water present in the storage line or tank (conversion to vapor which occurs at 212 degree Fahrenheit). Samples are generally drawn below 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
